Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who often has accurate information about Apple’s plans, said Apple has already tested an under-display version of Touch ID for the iPhone. However, it is unlikely to appear on the iPhone 15 or other flagship models in the near future.
Add Touch ID back to your iPhone along with Face ID, especially useful if Face ID isn’t working properly. It also provides an added layer of security if two ways of logging in are required.
Last year, The Wall Street Journal’s Gurman and Joanna Stern reported that Apple was again testing in-display fingerprint authentication on at least some iPhone 13 models. However, the company isn’t pushing the feature forward, so they likely don’t like the way it works.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a September 2021 research note that Apple will release at least one new iPhone with an in-display fingerprint scanner in the second half of 2023. That’s roughly the same time as the iPhone 15 launch line, but he hasn’t said anything since then. “We believe that the upcoming iPhone 2H23 will have fingerprint detection under the display,” Kuo said.
According to Gurman’s latest update, Kuo’s original prediction may no longer be accurate, and the iPhone 15 may continue to use Face ID alone like the iPhone X.
Will Apple Ever Reintroduce Touch ID?
Several news stories have said that Apple might bring Touch ID back to iPhones. But these are just rumors that haven’t been put into action. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says in his latest Power On newsletter that Apple has no plans to bring back the Touch ID feature any time soon.
Will Iphone Go Back to Touch ID?
Apple thought about bringing Touch ID back to its top-of-the-line iPhones. Testing was done, but it’s unlikely that the feature will be added back to the main smartphone lineup any time soon.
Why Do Iphones No Longer Have Touch ID?
Recent in-display fingerprint sensors are usually faster and bigger than their predecessors. Even so, Apple left the feature out of the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max in favor of Face ID.
