New iPad 2022 release date, price, specifications and features

Apple unveiled the new iPad 2022 — and it didn’t launch it with much fanfare, dropping a press release instead of hosting a full-blown launch event.

The slate debuted alongside the iPad Pro 2022 lineup, and it’s been considerably upgraded in many ways, including a more powerful chipset, new cameras, 5G support, USB-C, and more.

Below we’ve detailed everything you need to know about the new tablet, including key specs, price, and shipping times.

New iPad 2022: release date and price

The new iPad 2022 is available for pre-order now and will ship on October 26th — though don’t be surprised if that date starts to be pushed back to later orders, just as models in the iPhone 14 lineup are facing shipping delays.

It starts at $449/£499/AU$749, and you can get the 64GB Wi-Fi model. If you want storage capacity with cellular connectivity, it’s $599 / £679 / AU$999. There’s also a 256GB model for $599 / £679 / AU$999 with Wi-Fi and $749 / £859 / AU$1,249 with cellular.

design and display

Compared to iPad 10.2 (2021), the new iPad 2022 has a more modern design, as the physical home button is gone, allowing for smaller bezels and a full-screen design.

The slates come in silver, blue, pink and yellow shades. It measures 248.6 x 179.5 x 7 mm and weighs 477 grams, compared to 481 grams for the honeycomb model.

The screen is bigger than before, at 10.9 inches. It’s a 1640 x 2360 Liquid Retina display with 264 pixels per inch and a maximum brightness of 500 nits.

cameras and battery

The camera has been upgraded here, with a 12MP f/1.8 snapper on the back of the iPad 2022, up from 8MP on the previous model.

Of course, the front-facing camera is arguably more important on the tablet, and it’s been tweaked as well. It’s the 12MP ultrawide lens from last year, but this time it’s landscape (meaning the lens is centered on one of the long sides), which makes it better for video calls.

You can record video up to 4K quality with the rear camera and up to 1080p with the front camera.

As for the battery, as usual, Apple didn’t reveal the capacity, but said it could provide up to 10 hours of usage for web browsing or watching videos over Wi-Fi. That’s the same thing it said about the previous model, so don’t expect improvements here.

One upgrade, though, is that the new iPad 2022 charges via USB-C instead of Lightning, a long-standing change.

specifications and features

The new iPad 10.9 2022 runs iPadOS 16 and has an A14 Bionic processor – this is also the chipset you’ll find in the iPhone 12, and it’s an upgrade from the A13 Bionic in the previous model.

There’s a choice of 64GB or 256GB of storage — though whether it’s really an option to consider in 2022 is another matter, as 64GB is a small amount since it’s not expandable.

There’s also 5G, which was missing from the previous model, and despite the removal of the home button, there’s still a Touch ID fingerprint scanner — it’s just been relocated in the top button.

The iPad 2022 also supports the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil – although it’s surprisingly sticking with the first-gen Apple Pencil, which means it also needs a USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter, which is certainly an interesting Apple move decision.
