Apple shares more details on iOS 16.1’s clean energy charging feature

iOS 16.1 includes a clean energy charging option designed to allow iPhone users to reduce their carbon footprint. Clean Energy Charging selectively charges when electricity with lower carbon emissions is available to those who need greener charging options.

Apple today released a support document on clean energy charging, providing more specific details on how it works, how to disable it if necessary, and what settings need to be activated to make it work.

Clean Energy Charging is limited to the US, and it requires Location Services, System Customization, and Vital Location to work in the System Services section of the Settings app.

It’s on by default, and those who want to turn it off need to turn it off by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.

When enabled, Clean Energy Charging allows the “iPhone” to obtain a forecast of carbon emissions in nearby energy grids and use that information to charge the “iPhone” during clean energy production.

Apple says that clean energy charging works in conjunction with optimized battery charging to learn about the user’s habits and only use it when the iPhone is charging for an extended period of time, such as at home or at work. It will not engage if charging habits are variable or the user is in a new location (such as when traveling).

When Clean Energy Charging is turned off for charging, a notification on the lock screen provides details on when your iPhone is fully charged, similar to optimizing battery charging. Touch and hold the notification to reveal the “Charge Now” option to set the ‌iPhone‌ to fully charge the ‌iPhone‌.
