Apple released many new products this year, like the Mac Studio and Apple Watch Ultra, but we also said goodbye to some other familiar products. Below, we review five products and accessories that Apple will discontinue in 2022.
27-inch iMac
After launching the Mac Studio and Studio Display in March, Apple discontinued the 27-inch iMac, the last iMac model with an Intel processor. With the iMac Pro also discontinued last year, the 24-inch iMac with the M1 chip is the only all-in-one desktop computer Apple currently sells. Big names like Mark Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo claim that the iMac Pro could make a comeback in 2023.
iPod touch
Apple announced it was discontinuing the iPod touch in May and removed the device from Apple’s website in June. iOS 16 is incompatible with any iPod touch model, marking the end of software compatibility for portable music players.
First introduced in October 2001, the iPod is one of Apple’s most iconic products, but with the wide variety of Apple products that can now play music, including the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, HomePod mini and more. The last-generation iPod touch launched in May 2019.
Apple Watch Edition
In addition to the new titanium case Apple Watch Ultra introduced in September, the Apple Watch Edition line has also been discontinued.
Apple Watch Edition models have been available since the first-generation Apple Watch launched in 2015. Over the years, these models have distinguished themselves with high-end case material options such as gold, ceramic and titanium. The Apple Watch Ultra is now the only model to offer a titanium case, while the Hermès model is still available as a luxury item.
Apple TV HD
Following the launch of the third-generation Apple TV 4K in October, Apple discontinued the outdated Apple TV HD models first introduced in 2015.
The new Apple TV 4K starts at $129, while the Apple TV HD was $149 before it was discontinued. Originally launched as the fourth-generation Apple TV and later renamed Apple TV HD, the streaming box was limited to 1080p video quality and was the first Apple TV to feature tvOS, the App Store, and a Siri-enabled remote.
5W Power Adapter
Apple appears to have discontinued its compact 5W chargers for iPhones in the US around August, as the power adapters have since been sold out.
Apple included the 5W charger with the iPhone 3G with the iPhone 11, though the charger has undergone some minor modifications over the years, in part because Apple has issued two voluntary safety recalls in specific countries. Unlike Apple’s newer USB-C chargers, the 5W charger comes with a USB-A port and can’t do fast charging.
The iPhone 11 Pro models come with a faster 18W USB-C charger in the box, and Apple stopped including the charger in the iPhone 12 and later models entirely.
