Ahead of the debut of what Google claims is a Pixel-branded foldable phone, the Google Pixel Fold release schedule has been revealed online. The news comes shortly after the launch of the Pixel 7 series and the company’s first smartwatch, the Pixel Watch, earlier this week. While fans were hoping to see Google’s foldable smartphone at the “Made by Google” launch event, the company is said to have delayed the foldable phone’s launch. Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), said the first Pixel foldable phone could hit the market in the first quarter of 2023.
In response to a tweet asking about the Pixel foldable phone, Young said Google’s first foldable phone could arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2023. He also claimed that the company will begin receiving panel shipments for the phone in January.
Previous reports have suggested that Google may be working on two foldable smartphones. Recently, a developer spotted a foldable smartphone codenamed “Felix” in a line of code for Google’s Android 13 Quarterly Platform Release 1 (QPR1) beta.
The foldable phone is said to have a triple rear camera setup consisting of an IMX787 primary sensor, an IMX386 ultra-wide-angle lens, and an S5K3J1 telephoto lens. Its external display will likely feature the S5k3J1 telephoto selfie camera. Earlier this year, a Google foldable phone codenamed “Pipit” also surfaced. The developers claim that the Tensor SoC in this model is now obsolete.
A recent report suggests that Google’s foldable smartphone could be named Pixel Fold or Pixel Notepad. It is expected to be manufactured in China by Foxconn. The launch of the smartphone was reportedly pushed back to May earlier this year. It may feature a 7.57-inch inner display and a 5.78-inch outer display with an ultra-thin glass cover.
